2022 Contest jury announced

Meet the jury of the 2022 World Press Photo Contest

We are pleased to introduce the professionals from around the world who will select and award the best photojournalism and documentary photography of 2021.

Regional jury

In line with the new World Press Photo Contest model, a regional jury in each region will first make a selection of entries per category. The regional jury is composed of professionals from and/or working in that region, with a range of expertise.

Global jury

The independent global jury consists of the 2022 World Press Photo Contest regional jury chairs and one additional member, the global jury chair. Once the regional juries have made their selection, the global jury will decide on the regional winners and from those, the global winners. The global jury is assisted by a secretary, responsible for all procedural matters and ensuring the rules and procedures are fairly and properly applied.

Entries for the 65th annual World Press Photo Contest are open until 11 January 2022. The judging process will start on 17 January and take place in several rounds. See the full jury overview here. Learn more about the 2022 Contest judging process here.

2022 Global jury chair

Rena Effendi will chair the 2022 World Press Photo Contest global jury.

Focusing on issues of conflict, social justice and the environment, Rena Effendi is a documentary photographer from Baku, Azerbaijan. She is currently based in Istanbul, Turkey. Over the past two decades, Effendi has photographed human interest stories around the world, working frequently as a contributor to National Geographic Magazine.

“Certain perspectives have been dominating the media landscape for a long time. This year World Press Photo is moving in the right direction with a new regional format, which will allow and ensure representation of diverse storytellers from around the world to be spotlighted,” she stated.
